In the 1941 war programme 5 full destroyer flotillas of 8 ships each were ordered with the U class being the 7th war emergency flotilla having commenced with the O class. These 40 ships were deemed the maximum British yards could launch in 12 months comprising the U, V, W, Y with the 5th flotilla intended to be a new C class but which went through numerous name changes over a few months, finally emerging as the CA class.

Here is a forlorn Ulster awaiting the breakers torches in 1980, her original destroyer hull clearly evident. She was one of few Type 15's which actually had a worthwhile post conversion career.
