BULUWAYO (1895)

Tyne-built!
BULUWAYO, Bucknall Bros, 4412gt, completed Armstrong Mitchell, Low Walker, 5-1895
1913 KATHIAWAR (Bank Line) - BU Belgium 1q. 1923.
One of my treasured artifacts acquired during my long time with the Tees and Hartlepool Port Authority is a rather battered copy of handbook THE TEES PORTS compiled by the Secretary to the Tees Conservancy Commissioners published in September 1897. Several photographs depict the then Tees scene but only two contain ships which can be identified. This is one of them, showing the Bucknall Line vessel BULUWAYO in Middlesbrough Dock (before acquiring her final configuration from 1899).

Just to illustrate the various problems associated with historic ship research I initially misread her name as BULOWAYO (resulting in a miscaptioning of the photo!), but did find one reference online to her as such. In rechecking for this item (and thereby ascertaining her correct spelling as BULUWAYO - at least according to Miramar, and Harry Appleyard in his WSS Bank Line history) I also found her rendered in well-recognised sources as BULAWAYO!!!

Somewhere along the line I have archived a colour print of the same view!
