TIMO (was: Unidentified coaster - 1963-66 period)

Postby teesships » Wed Nov 14, 2012 6:32 pm

One of the best ship photos, and the most frustrating, taken by Albert Weller in Tees Bay. A lovely view of an elderly Dutch or German coaster but as you can see not the faintest hint of a name! The only possible clues seem to be the funnel design and that, from other ships on the same negative strip, the photo was taken 1963 or later. Any ideas welcome!

The curved plate forward of the rails is a Dutch feature, I recall.
Can put it on a Dutch forum (Kustvaartforum) if you wish.

Via Kustvaartforum ...

Hello George, Seems to be the "Nova Zembla". Was built in 1939 as "Ali" for A. Bakker. 3 cyl. 2-stroke Brons, 150 HP.
In 1961 sold to Albertus van Vliet and renamed Nova Zembla. January 1972 sold to Portugal, Panama flag.
February 1972 arrested by French Customs and layd up at Le Havre.
February 1975 sold to Alderney, repaired at Guernsey and renamed "Ord". In service from begin 1976.
In 1978 sold to Anguilla. Sailed from Guernsey 19-10-'78.
Regards, Klaas

She was Gebr. Sander, Delfzijl yn 161 and sank 11/11/1983 in the Caribbean between San Juan and St. Thomas.
Here she is as ALI in a Charlie Hill photo from Swinefleet.

George,

Grateful thanks to Klaas and Kustvaartforum for what seems a pretty good match! This sent me to my own negative collection to see If I had complete verification. I found I had four negatives, all taken by Dave Hocquard of Guernsey. The main variation between Charlie's view of the ALI and Albert's is the three portholes close together on the starboard side under the bridge against only two port side. Only one of Dave's views is from port and while clearly showing there are two portholes close together it is still not totally conclusive. It can be seen that her mainmast had been removed by the time of Dave's photos. However, I am sufficiently satisfied!

Another Dutch contact has raised some doubts, based also on number/spacing of portholes and the davit position.
Maybe tomorrow will bring another name.

Identified as TIMO, see: http://www.kustvaartforum.com/viewtopic ... start=2085

Quite exciting to get this confirmation as I saw the TIMO at Tyne-Tees/Dent's Wharves early in 1962, which would be a previous visit to Albert seeing her.
