Thank You NE and Dave ? Certainly looking quite “Tiddly” bearing in mind her age. Two Cylinder Compound (HP +LP) can be Pig to get away because of the position of the Cranks when they settle and a little bit of Impulse Steam is required by means of the Impulse valve Levers which allows Steam directly from the Boiler at Boiler Steam Pressure into the Cylinder required without going through the Valve Gear, however over use of this “facility” can damage the Condenser.
It was practice if Stop rang on the Telegraph to keep the Cranks rocking backwards and forwards because of the above problems unless it was a double ring which meant Dead Stop.
Steam Engineers did not have spotty faces.
