Tilbury Caisson

Tilbury Caisson

Postby Whickham » Thu May 01, 2014 6:42 am

I was sent the following photo by Kevin Haydon, but with no further details. I think it might show a caisson built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson in 1928. Also a "Dry" tug, again not sure of identity, but may be SNOWDON but not got any good photos to compare. Any thoughts?

They built a number of "Caisson's" around that time and none of them have any additional information regarding destination.

The 1928 one was Yard Number 1351 built at Wallsend.
Keel Laid. 17th April 1928.
Launched. 4th September 1928.
Trials Date. 27th September 1928 so presumably this would be around the time when the picture was taken.

Thanks for the extra data Paul, Tyne & Wear Archives confirms the yard number as Tilbury. See:

Couldn't get the above link to work with the www. in front so have left it off. Copy and paste with the www. back in front.
