Both Talisman & Termagant were originally ordered by Turkey but taken over by the Admiralty during WW1
The ship with the Tripod mast astern oF the group may be the Monitor ROBERTS Ex STONEWALL JACKSON

Really interesting picture thanks for posting.
I think you a right about the ship in the background being a monitor but as we are looking downstream I suspect it is one of the Palmers built monitors Marshall Ney, Marshall. Soult or General Wolfe

I looked at that possibility and after studying all the Photographs I have of the Palmers Built Monitors I found that none of them matched the mast configuration of the one in the photograph

you definitely seem to be correct about the Roberts. I wonder if Palmers had anything to do with the engines or armament.

Having looked at the photograph again I think that I was wrong in the assumption that the Roberts was moored at Palmers. i think that she is in fact in the middle of the river itself.

I wonder what the reason was calling her STONEWALL JACKSON ?

She was launched as STONEWALL JACKSON, then renamed M4.
Soon afterwards she became EARL ROBERTS and then they settled on "just" ROBERTS

The date from Ian's book of Dave's Picture is June 1915 sooooooooo that more or less dates the first picture to then as well. She was not on the Tyne for very long in her completed state.

If the date is 5 Nov 1915, the monitor cannot be ROBERTS, MARSHAL NEY or MARSHAL SOULT, all of whom had left the river by then. However GENERAL WOLFE was completed by Palmer's Hebburn yard on 9 Nov, so must be her.

The debate about these Palmers built monitors has been intriguing especially as H L never built one.

So, let us return to some of the destroyers as in original post, focusing on the Talisman class which were constructed from materials ordered by the Ottomen and duly constructed for our RN, the intended owners of course were in with the Germans.

R & W H L built all 4 as follows with their original intended names noted as ex.
Talisman ex Napier
Termagant ex Narbrough
Talisman ex Offa
Turbulent ex Ogre
The first 3 were all sold to Ward in 1921 for breaking, Turbulent was sunk at Jutland 1 June 1916.

As an observation these ex names appear in the Tynebuiltships site as planned Ottoman names which is incorrect.
