Mega scarce if not unique occurence with the construction of all 3 grey navy ships named Amazon in the 20th Century.
The trio were all built in the same yard, 1 and 2 by Thornycroft, 3 by the then Vosper Thornycroft all in Woolston.
1 - launch 29 July 1908.
2 - Launch 27 Jan 1926 and not intended date.
3 - launch 26 April 1971 for this Type 21 Frigate.
I have checked and double checked all RN warships built in the 20th Century where 3 or more bearing the same name have been constructed. Amazon is totally unique. Amongst Tribal names where 3 of each name were built there is Tartar, Nubian, Zulu, Mohawk then Ghurka/Gurkha had 4.
As for merchant ships there is absolutely nothing which can match this owner builder association for varied and obvious reasons.
Thats all folks. Sean.
